Oh the many ways you can read to your child!

One of the most important things you can do for your child each and everyday is... read a book.  Just one book a night will go a long way!

Showing them your interest in reading will increase their interest in reading! They love to follow in dad or moms footsteps.

Ways to read a book... now you might be thinking well it’s not that hard to read a book- just read it... well I say there are lots of ways to read it!

1. Your intonation — read it with emotion! Use your voice and show your emotion!

2. Read it - each and every word! Teach them all about the actual physical book - the spine, the front cover, the page, a word, a letter, a picture, the author, the illustrator, the copyright, etc.

3. On a page or a few pages, have your child identify a picture or a letter or a word by pointing to what you just named. E.g. point to the letter b or point to the dog’s ears or point to the word good.

4. On a few pages, you point to a picture, a letter, or word and have your child name/label it.

5. Ask WH questions about the story — read a few pages and recap. Ask questions to see how much they have comprehended. **WH questions = who, what, when, where, why, how

6. At the end of the story ask your child to retell it using the pictures and pages of the story. Or just retell without pictures and see how much they comprehended. This shows you how well your child can sequence (put in order) a story.

7. Have your child draw a picture of the story through a timeline or draw four boxes on a page have them draw the story- see image below.

8. If your child might need some help with colors then instead of reading the book word for word just look through the pages and have your child point to the color you name (receptive language) or you point to a color and have your child name it (expressive language).

** you can do this with all sorts of basic concepts like prepositions - which one is UNDER the table? Or which toy is IN the box?

Oh the many ways you can read a book to your child! Try some different ways and see how your child likes it!!
