Apple users (iPhone/iPad)- Tips & Tricks

Writer's picture: MariaMaria

I have been to a few continuing education conferences on the use of electronics and technology in therapy but more specifically the use of iPads and tablets. So, I want to share some of my recent knowledge on this topic! I think it’s beneficial to anyone who uses iPhones, iPads, and Apple computers!

Reminders App

Do a shared grocery list with your family members! I have several other shared lists-- I have created: To do list (one for me, one for my husband), Family house project list, other shopping lists - Sam’s or Costco, Home Depot or Lowe’s, Christmas and Birthday gift wish list, etc. Make as many as you want!

Go to the reminders app > bottom right corner of screen hit Add List > name the list (mine is named grocery) > click on the grocery list > top right of screen hit ... > hit Add People and invite via message, mail, facebook, etc.

Calendar App

Do a shared calendar with your family members! This is a life saver with a very busy and ever changing schedule!

Go to the calendars app > bottom middle of screen hit calendars > bottom left of screen hit add calendar>create a calendar and share it with family members

The shared reminder lists and shared calendar allows all people connected to it the ability to add and make changes to it. This way it's open communication with all family members on what's happening and what needs to be done!

Guided Access

Go to Settings> Accessibility> Guided Access> toggle on> passcode settings (set passcode) > toggle on accessibility shortcut on.

Now, go to an app (any app) and triple click the home button, hit start on guided access.

To close guided access on app, triple click the home button, type in passcode, and hit end.

Now these instructions may be different on the newer iPhones and iPads- but hopefully close to the same.

Guided Access is excellent for when you want your three year old to FaceTime Grandma and your three year old wants to hold the phone. Guided Access locks you into an app. You can even block areas of the screen so if you press that part of the screen that's blocked it does not do anything. It's also great for when you give the iPad to your older children -- you can place them in an educational app to play and they cannot get out of it until you unlock it. Lastly, this is great with those with special needs who communicate through the iPad, it allows them to touch the screen and it activates only the part of the screen that needs to be activated.

Timer in the Clock App

clock app > set timer to however many minutes >touch “when timer ends” > scroll to bottom and touch “stop playing

Now, set and start the timer for however long you want, go into an app of your choosing and wait for the timer to go off. When the timer goes off, the iPhone/iPad will lock.

This timer trick is great for when you tell your child- only 5 minutes on the iPad then it's off for the day. This way you set that timer, then it locks the iPad. The only thing is with the timer and guided access - you can be the only one who knows the passcode/password! ;)

Hope you find these tips and tricks helpful!
