Speech Therapy...Speech Pathology... what is it?

Writer's picture: MariaMaria

Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) or a Speech Therapist (ST) is a person who has a masters degree in speech language pathology. To me it does not matter if you call me an SLP, ST, or a speech teacher. As an SLP, I can work with all ages from birth to 99 (or older!) A lot of people ask me how do you work with a baby? Well we work on feeding, most of the muscles you use to speak with are the muscles you use to eat with!

So, what do we do?

We work with people who need help in the following areas:

Articulation/Speech

Language- receptive, expressive, and social/pragmatic

Fluency or Stuttering

Feeding/Swallowing

Voice

Cognition/Executive Functioning

Where do we work?

Home Health

Schools

Private Clinics

Hospitals

Skilled Nursing Facilities

and more!

Why do we do what we do?

Well every SLP may have a different answer... but I do it because I am passionate about it! I love working with people, learning from people, and I love educating families. I love to work with clients, parents, and teachers on how to improve communication and functional skills to make daily living easier and happier for all those involved. Also, I am a bit of a nerd. I love to research and read about all the new and upcoming strategies and techniques to use in the speech world!

So, any questions?
